The Paulina Lakeshore Loop is a beautiful, relatively flat 7.5 mile loop in Newberry Volcanic Monument. It features magnificent views of Paulina Peak, hot springs, obsidian rocks, and takes you along the cold crystal blue waters of Paulina Lake.
Runners and hikers primarily start at Paulina Lake Campground and explore this loop counter-clockwise. Although the trail is pretty flat, be sure to check where you’re placing your feet because it is fairly technical and has many rocks in the middle of the trail. While checking your footing, you’ll notice shiny, black obsidian rocks leftover from Newberry’s past volcanic eruptions. Around mile 4, on the northeast corner of the lake, take a left off the trail to explore great hot springs. The last few miles of the trail give you the best perspective of Paulina Peak reflecting off Paulina Lake’s blue waters.
Wrap up your lakeshore adventure with food and drinks at the rustic Paulina Lake Lodge!
